Salsa 171 Sworn To The Drum: A Tribute To Francisco Aquabella
Video (Flower Films 1162),
Description:
The film is a portrait of Afro-Cuban drummer, Francisco Aguabella, a master both of the bata tradition of drumming in the sacred celebrations of the African-derived syncratic sects of Santería, Abaqua and Yeza and of the secular conguero tradition. Aguabella was born and reared in Cuba, lived in New York for a number of years and has been a California resident since 1971. The film explores Aguabella's role both as a sacred drummer and a figure of historical influence in Latin jazz, pop and fusion in the United States. Today, he continues to perform Latin jazz, as well as function as a tambolero in his religious community. Also appearing in this film are: Armando Peraza, Carlos "Patato" Valdez, Israel "Cachao" López, Dizzy Gillespie, Daniel Ponce, Bobbi Cespedes, Carlos Santana, John Santos, Katherine Dunham, and Robert Farris Thompson. Irakere - TV Cubana approx. 60 min. quality is fair to poor but this
is the original lineup with Paquito and Arturo. This set is smokin.
Much like a video of their original live album.
Irakere - TV Venezuala approx. 40 min. Similar to the Cubana set
better vid quality and some newer material including El Coco.
Paquito had already spilt for the states but the band still rocks.

Salsa 176
Gonzalo Rubalcaba y Proyecto - An early band of Rubalcabas with
Horatio Hernandez on drums and Roberto Vizcaino on percussion. Lots of

Los Papines w/ Tata Guiness- In Cuba
Based in Habana, los Papines is one of Cuba's top rumba bands. From an announcement by La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley: "Los Papines are a world-renowned master percussion quartet. Their spontaneity combined with their African sounds make their concert an experience full of rhythm, energy and pleasure. But what makes them different is their way of playing the drums or golpe de cuero y canto giving the public a taste of the original rumba cubana. They are also known as The Kings of Rumba.  Los Papines are the four brothers Abreu born in Marianao, Cuba, cradle of the best rumba musicians, among them one of the greatest, Chano Pozo.  As children, Luis, Alfredo, Jesus, and Ricardo started playing rumbas on cans, then with codfish boxes, and later with tumbadoras, quintos, claves and cucharas (spoons). In the 50's Ricardo created Papin y sus Rumberos and finally in 1962, the four brothers united and started playing together as Los Papines. They began playing guaguanco, cumbia, yambo, jiribillas and especially rumbas. Other rhythms such as boleros and son come along later. They started to work as professional musicians in cabarets and nightclubs such as Tropicana.  Los Papines have taken their music around the world and have shared the stage with renown musicians such as; Panchito Berejano, Manteca, Daria Nasaco, Chicho from Benni More's Orchestra, Ray Barreto, Mongo Santamaría. Roberto Roena, Tito Puente, Oreste Vilató and many others."

Salsa 200 Clave y Guaguanco
The legendary group Clave Y Guaguancó was founded in Havana over 50 years ago and is dedicated to researching and developing the traditions of Afro-Cuban music. With roots style singing, drumming and dancing, they'll introduce you to the universe of gods, magic and African-rooted rituals. They play Yambú, Guaguancó, Columbias and Cuban carnival music as well as more purely African music from the Yoruba, Arará, Abakuá, Congo or Bantú.
The director is Amado de Jesús Dédeu, an experienced rumbero with a long career. The group's recordings for EGREM are marketed in the States by Green Linnet Records and were successful and winning several awards. One of their vocalist is also a famous woman percussionist, Amelia Pedroso.
