Let's Dance LA

Master level Salsa teacher Enio Cordoba & Terryl Jones who both appeared in the movie "Dance with me" & were dance instructors for it have produced  2 video's  on Casino Rueda.
Enio is very well known teacher. Very good series. Well worth buying. I enjoyed these tapes. Enio is a very good dancer & teacher. Complete series for both fun & performance. Buy the Johnny Polanco Cd as well.
Video 1 Level 1& 2 video starts off with the Latin All Stars from California performing a exhibition form of Casino Rueda. Enio's style of Salsa Rueda combines high speed Salsa, Square dancing, Disco turns.
Level 1 starts off with the Guaperia basic. Enio shows several basic steps here. Enio teaches as a couple then slows the steps in a 5 couple form. Enio has included a  sound overlay from the video giving better sound quality than some other videos.
The video then shows the Synchronization Basics. Enio counts the beats on the group forms. You cannot hear Enio calling out the steps in the group shots. Enio shows the steps at normal speed he also slows them down & stops at key points. Enio teaches many variations of the basic turns like with the Enchufa step Con El Enano/ El Principe/ La Piscina/ Y Castigala/ Stevie Wonder. In the group shots Enio includes steps not shown as a couple form. Enio includes advanced forms of the basic steps.
Enio finished level 1 with a demonstration of these basic steps in their professional show. Level 2 starts off the same as level 1 with basic steps giving lots of variations of these steps up to advanced forms. Enio includes modern non traditional steps. This level shows some good basic steps. The video finishes with the compete demonstration of their professional show. This is an impressive display of exhibition Rueda combining traditional & modern Salsa steps.
Video 2  level 3 video covers over 45 steps. It starts out with a short series of public displays & class shots. It covers the 7 basic steps very quickly.  This video includes a written  on screen display of what is being shown. The steps are shown in a couple, 2 couple, group, upper body then foot shot. Terryl gives the females tips in this video. The teaching style is much improved over the first video. Enio then shows the hand signals at the end of this video. It finishes with a three couple display of the steps.
This is a long video over 60 minutes. If you can only afford to buy one video this would be the best value for money.
Video 3 now out. No review yet.
Enio calls his style Salsa Rueda & I think it is a good name for it. It combines traditional Casino Rueda with modern Salsa.

Salsa Lovers Dance Studios
Instructional salsa videos by Rene Gueits of Salsa Lovers of Miami. Miami Cuban salsa style.
Video 1 Beginner Level 1 & 2  starts out with a list of the instructors on this series. Then a three couple demonstration of Casino dancing. The Salsa basic is shown then a Salsa side step then Enchufa step. Rene then explains their are over 300 combinations in Casino. Rene explains that 90% of the turns start on the man's left shoulder & end on the man's right shoulder.
Rene then shows Vacilala, Enchufa doble, Adios con la hermana & how to bring the woman back to the left shoulder. This is important to know for you couples who are learning without a group. It means you can include Casino in your nightclub dancing without a group. Rene then starts the Rueda instruction using a three couple group. Rene counts the steps & shows both the male & female steps. The pace is slow enough for beginners to follow the turns. Rene explains the meanings behind the call terms like Exhibe la. Rene then gives you combinations of the turns. Rene then explains a difference between Casino & Casino Rueda. Rene then teaches the turns like Dame una, Dame dos. Rene explains why you tap in certain turns. This is a fast paced tape. Rene usually only shows each step a couple of times. Rene slows the steps down at the key points. Rene covers the most important basic turn combinations. Rene shows the turns in the level combinations. Rene gives an explanation of the Miami style.
Rene then explains why hand signals are used & which are used. Also who calls the turns. Rene then explains certain turns do not have hand signals. Some turns follow certain turns done before them in a certain pattern. Rene then shows the hand signals without calls in a three couple demonstration. Rene finishes with an explanation of why so many people like Casino. The video finishes with a three couple demonstration with one of the female instructors calling the turns.
The list of turns on the cover this first video is incomplete as is the level on the video. This first video covers beginners level 1,2 & 3. Rene also teaches more steps than on the cover list.
Video 2 Intermediate Level 1,2 & 3  starts out the same as level 1 video. Rene teaches this level as a couple. Rene also includes the hand signals. Rene starts the enfolding turns. This also is a fast paced video with lots of turns. Rene then does the turns in a three couple Casino Rueda form with Rene calling the turns, including hand signals & counting the steps. Watching this demonstration I am reminded that certain Salsa people cannot understand how some Salsa dancers can dance Salsa without music. This is a good demonstration of people who have rhythm. This is a short video but it is packed with turns.
Video 3 Advanced Level 1,2 & 3  starts out the same as the other 2 videos. Rene teaches the turns as a couple. This also is a fast paced video with the turns only shown once or a couple of times. Rene then shows the advanced combinations in a three couple group.
Two Master Level video have just been finished. Only on Salsalovers site as yet
The time given on the two Master level tapes is incorrect. Both together are 44 min not each video.
Each video is about 22 min long.

Review  of the Master level videos by Piero González  http://www.salsaatmaryland.com/
These tapes are well produced and flow pretty smoothly. Almost all turns are pretty leadable though pretty complex. I like that the instructors execute the move to music before they teach the turn. It gives you a good idea of what styling and flavor you can inject into the turn. The turns are explained well though not over explained like some other Casino tapes I won't mention. I wish you could see the moves from the back view as well as the front view. I consider myself a pretty decent Casino dancer and I found it pretty difficult to figure out some turns where the bodies block the arms (El Nudo de DJ is an example). I wish they hadn't eliminated the part of the tape where they do all moves in a group. I liked to see the Masters at work when they execute them as a group. The only moves they do in a group now are El Clasico, Puente and Puente Complicado.

There are staple Miami turns such as La Cuadra, Puente Complicado, El Clasico in these tapes.

You have got to be well versed in the Miami/Cuban style to almost all these turns. Guys and Girls have to remember that there is a lot of walking and traveling in Casino. Forget huge and long extensions in Casino style. And you have got to know when to backrock and when to walk.

There are some Master level moves most however are just extended Basic to Intermediate level.
12 moves in the first video & 14 in the second.
This series is the style of steps that I remember doing in Cuba in the 1960's & 1970's. There are new moves I have never seen before on this series. I would suggest that people have done some learning by video before starting this series as these tapes are fast paced & full of moves. This is really street Casino Rueda. These are good quality tapes. Good rewinding & pause/ still advance. This series teaches all the moves you will need for nightclub dancing. This is an excellent series on Casino Rueda.

In March 2002 they will present new volumes 6 & 7 featuring more dynamic Miami Salsa combinations with an introduction to Couples Salsa Dancing.

This is only for absolute beginners. It teaches Salsatrio & a Cumbia backstep Rueda. The dancing is really bad at times but if you are just looking for some principles to begin your training then it is okay.
There are some Cuban's who dance with this style but I personally think it just looks bad. It is for those people who cannot do any styling with their feet to Cuban music.

This video does not appear to be for sale anymore

Salsa Racing Studios 7 dvd's

The Salsa racing studio dvd's are video-dvd's.
They have no menu or chapters making them hard to learn from.
They are just copies of their VHS videos onto a dvd disc.
We recommend you buy the videos not the dvd's from this school.
These dvd's are best for those of you wanting to learn one on one Miami Rueda social style.
The instruction is okay. It is not very detailed. Just standard techniques, noting unique or very interesting.
These are the best videos for Spanish only speakers.
The Rueda-trio or as they call it Salsa Triples was the only really interesting video. Well worth buying.

Very basic. No information of video on site. Just contact information.

There is a Casino call site at http://www.arana.com/rueda/
Note : no video just written instruction of the steps.

General Conclusion
I would buy Luz Pinto's video if you are a beginner.
If you are an beginner to intermediate dancer I would buy Enio's video.
If you are an intermediate to advanced dancer or you have learned by video before I would buy Salsa Lovers videos + level 3 tape by Enio.
If you are an advanced dancer or very confident I would buy Eric Freeman's series.
Common comment by beginners : If you intend to produce a Casino video may I ask that in your couple shoots you get your dancers to dress in different color outfits as it makes it easier for beginners to follow the dancers.

I looked at buying this video but the postage is only $4.00 so I can only assume they only ship to
USA address. So I will never be able to buy it. O well I cannot buy everything.

Cuba Danzon dance

This movie is not an instructional video but it is possible to learn the basic step for the Danzon from this movie. If you are good at learning by video it is possible to learn more advanced steps by slow forwarding the movie. This movie has some good Danzon dancing & some of the greatest Danzon song's. This movie is not for the young. It is slow paced & romantic.
For someone my age, it is excellent. I loved this movie.

If you want a good understanding of life in Cuba. Try this book. It's very enjoyable.

Amor Por el Baile - is a very nice performance show video. No longer for sale?
1st Annual West Coast Salsa Congress 2000 video Two - is more a performance video than an instructional video. Not very helpful. Learning from it would take a lot of rewinding & slow forwarding to get the moves. Bad positions, etc. It is really just short views of the individual workshops. Some of the moves are nice but it is not a video I recommend to learn from.

The Third Annual West Coast Salsa Congress Videos 1 & 2 Review
Warning - The video quality of the first Video 1 is substandard. It is still watchable but it was not good.
These are very long videos- 2 hours each full of performance dance companies demo's.
Just about every dance style is covered. A lot of non Salsa music & dancing. Lots of Latin Pop.
The dancing skills are basic to Master level. I feel these videos are best for dance companies to buy.
Just about everything that can be joined into Salsa is in these videos from Hip hop to Martial Arts.
90% of the dancing are group shines.

Cuban Rumba Videos

http://www.boogalu.com
Rumbon Tropical

Quick review : Must Buy. Full dvd, Menu & chapters.

This is without doubt the best video on modern Havana Rumba. The music & dance performances were all Excellent Master level. This is not traditional Rumba but is a video of modern Cuban Rumba even to the extent of a performance by the Rap group Mitad Y Mitad. The dance performance by Mitad Y Mitad was amazing.

This is the finest Cuban Rumba video ever to come out of Cuba.

All the performances had a fun feel to them. The musicians are masters at the chants & rhythms & the dancers ranged from very good to master level. The dance techniques ranged from traditional 18 century to pure 1930's dockside Rumba to modern Havana rap.

This video will appeal to anyone interested in Cuban music & dance.

This film is an odyssey through the eyes, words and music of individuals who pioneered Afro-Cuban music in the United States. The video offers a rich overview of a wide al styles from "Cubop" to Salsa, Big Band to jazz, and of musicians from Chano Ponzo to Tito Puente and Desi Arnaz to Johnny Colon. It examines the significant role of women performers and contains interviews with Mario Bauza and Dizzy Gillespie as they reveal the parallel course of jazz with the "latin sound".
